All Across Africa: Crafting the Burundian Culture

Day5_BurundiNgozi1-341

All Across Africa is venturing into Burundi, seeking opportunities to help empower and employ the citizens of this small East African country. Burundi rates 167 out of 177 countries in the Human Development Index (2008) with approx. 67% of its 10.16 million people living below the poverty line. AAA is looking to create sustainable business cooperatives, which allow the people to build their own businesses utilizing their traditional crafts and making them available to the global marketplace. Here are these people and their land.

STORMR Campaign: Olympic Wildness Pt. III

_N9A4726After a night’s rest, the men returned to the waters, this day wading into the flowing waters of the Olympic tributaries. Their STORMR foul-weather gear proved protective and durable as fishermen Simon Pollack and Skyler Vella threw flies before returning steelhead and salmon.

America’s Gun Culture: The Young Guns

MatixC-243

America has a gun problem. According to a Small Arms Survey in 2007 , 88 out of 100 Americans own a gun. That’s worthy of world domination. And after the latest elementary outbreak of gun violence in Sandyhook, Conn., questions continue to raise about the connections between guns, violent video games, and our American youth. Here are some images from an on-going project involving America’s young guns.

One mother I spoke with regarding the project declined to take part, but mentioned a story about her son. He was never permitted to play with toy guns. He wasn’t ever exposed to them in their household or on television. And she was unaware about any activities involving toy guns at their friends’ homes, but as soon as he reached a certain age where he began to develop his own personality, walk and make decisions on his own, something became apparent. When they would stroll on the beach or trek in the woods, the boy was instantly drawn toward sticks. These inanimate objects took on a life of their own. They became his toy guns. To this day she refuses to buy him any of these colorful plastic pieces.

When the United States military encourages their soldiers to play violent video games while on leave, and as the advent of drones is taking presence above foreign skies, it is intriguing how large the gaming industry has become. Not only is it exciting, competitive and imaginative, but it is also a fantasy world without consequences besides GAME OVER. From Mario Brothers to Grand Theft Auto, there has been an incredible evolution, blurring the lines of reality. America’s youth are also hooked.

The Honey Harvest is Near

DennisBeePortrait

With the nearing end of the the summer, a north hemisphere-wide honey harvest is about to begin, and I’m feeling pretty damn excited.  Longtime friend and fellow traveler Dennie P (aka D) stopped by and had the opportunity to check in on my hives.  I’m hoping he’s hooked!  He looks like it.

International Rescue Committee’s Summer Youth Programs – Seattle, WA

YouthSummerPrograms-407

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) puts on two summer youth programs, bringing recently resettled refugees together into the American school system.  Some have basic English skills, others have none.  This is just the intro into their new life, from harm to home in the U.S.

International Rescue Commitee’s Naturalization Ceremony – Seattle, WA

Naturalization-66I’ve had the pure joy of working with IRC’s Seattle Chapter since the start of 2013, connecting with a broad range of international community members around the Pacific Northwest region.  June 20th, 2013 was none other then World Refugee Day where a handful of individuals received their United States Citizenship at a local art gallery in downtown Seattle, which exhibited art by IRC-sponsored refugees turned U.S. citizens.  Here is a look at a naturalization ceremony, welcoming these newly-recognized U.S. citizens.

Olympic Day Hiking – The Brothers

OlympicHiking-34

Spent a sunny summer day hiking to the base of The Brothers on the Olympic Peninsula, reaching just above the tree-line before running out of time.  An hour and twenty minutes up to Lena Lake and then an additional three hours upwards.  We passed below massive pines and wound through streams that disappeared beneath the riverbeds.
