Seattle Central Creative Academy: Photography Assignment (Existing Light)
October 5, 2011 by 1 Comment
As part of our first assignment in Seattle Central’s 1st yr Commercial Photography program, students were asked to photograph an object using existing light; meaning no false lighting, only the sun, a reflective surface, and our innovation. I chose a feather resting in a small glass jar to represent a writer’s quill photographed as a still-life. The above image was created using a sheet of black construction paper as a seamless, with the sun at camera right and a reflector placed 90 degrees on camera left.
Location: Cal Anderson Park, Seattle, WA
Camera/Lens Specifics: Canon 5D Mark II with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM

Photo of the Day: Smith’s Sun

Walking off the Bainbridge – Seattle ferry run this morning, I noticed the sun beginning to rise behind Smith Tower, once hailed as the world’s tallest building outside New York City. But that was the beginning of the 20th century, and here she remains, still beaming in all her glory from the days she first stood.
Location: Washington State Ferry – Seattle, Washington
Camera/Lens Specifics: Canon 5D Mark II with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
105mm, 1/800 sec at f/6.3, ISO 250.

Captured in the jungles of southeastern Costa Rica, this little lizard rested in the afternoon heat upon a leaf of a local palm. Composing the image, I wanted to photograph the details of the tropical jungle, highlighting the lizard’s intricate skin while diffusing the background of a deteriorating jungle floor.
Location: Manzanillo, Costa Rica
Camera/Lens Specifics: Canon 5D Mark II with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM;
1/25 sec at f/4, ISO 1000.

Photo of the Day: A Honeybee’s Day is Labor Day
September 4, 2011 by Leave a Comment
Tireless in their pursuit, worker bees of the honeybee colony collect pollen during the summer season from sunrise to sundown. The pollen is stored within sacks on their rear legs, and once full, the honeybee returns to the hive where she stashes it into cells made of wax. With time, the pollen metamorphoses into honey and is kept for winter’s surplus.
